Tucson Roller Derby Qualifies for Women's Roller Derby Playoffs - August 4, 2014Tucson Saddletramps to Compete in Division 2 Tournament in Duluth, MN
AUSTIN, TEXAS - The Women's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) has announced that the Tucson Roller Derby Saddletramps have qualified for the 2014 WFTDA Division 2 Playoffs in Duluth, Minnesota, August 15-17 as the 11th seed of 20 Division 2 teams. The tournament seeding reflects the June 30 WFTDA rankings, which were based on sanctioned games played through that date.
Tucson has climbed 13 spots in the rankings since the beginning of the competitive season, enjoying a ranking of 53 of 259 full member WFTDA leagues. TRD president Joanne Amstutz, known by her derby monkier Mystery Meat, observes, "We may not have all the resources of bigger leagues, but by working with what we have and the guts and determination from not only the Tramps, but all of the TRD skaters, we can do great things."
The international WFTDA Playoffs and Championships tournament series brings together the most talented, highly trained and committed skaters and officials from WFTDA member leagues to display the "Real, Strong, Athletic and Revolutionary" game play that pushes the limits of the sport worldwide. Whether participating on the track, cheering in the stands or watching online, the WFTDA tournaments provide everyone who loves roller derby an opportunity to witness the most anticipated match-ups of the year.
The Saddletramps will take on the Big Easy Roller Girls from New Orleans, LA on August 15. After that bout, the Saddletramps will play two more games against teams from all over the country. Possible competition includes the Detroit Derby Girls (Detroit, MI), the Brewcity Bruisers (Milwaukee, WI), and the St. Chux Derby Chix (St. Charles, MO). To prepare for this three-day competition, the Saddletramps are adhering to a grueling practice schedule and have initiated a GoFundMe campaign to fundraise for their trip. Donations can be made in support of the Saddletramps at http://www.gofundme.com/Saddletramps.
The WFTDA Playoffs and Championships offer seven full weekends of full-contact competition. Learn how to join the action in Duluth; at the Championships in Nashville, Tennessee, Oct. 31-Nov. 2; or at any of the WFTDA postseason events at wftda.com/tournaments. Those who can't make the trip can still cheer on the Tucson Saddletramps from home, via the WFTDA's broadcast channel, WFTDA.tv!

Special Feature: Good Bye, Barbicide! - March 2014
TRD is one of the oldest leagues in modern flat track roller derby. For eleven years this non-profit, for-the-skaters by-the-skaters league has been delivering hard hits and riveting athletic displays. One skater has been there since the very beginning--the notorious #187, Barbicide.
With a skating career spanning more than a decade, Barbicide has the rare distinction of being one of the most veteran flat track roller derby skaters in the world. She was an original member of the Furious Truckstop Waitresses, a founding member of the VICE Squad, and also played for the two travel teams the Saddletramps and Bandoleras.
Modern roller derby is an involved and ever changing animal. Barbicide has had to learn, unlearn, and relearn some complicated rule sets and skating skills. But she has proven her adaptability, winning VICE Best Blocker a record three times. A monster on the track, Barb was known for her huge hits and a no holds barred attitude. This attitude earned her the award for "Meanest Rollergirl" more than any other TRD skater on record, though many will attest that beneath that tough tattooed exterior is a fiercely loyal and loving friend.
She is an icon not only for Tucson Roller Derby, but for Tucson as a whole. If you've been in The Old Pueblo for any length of time, chances are good that Barbicide has poured you a drink, cut your hair, or laid you out on the track.
Dear Barbicide, What a long strange trip it has been. Stranger still, will be skating Season 11 without you. We will always be ALL IN, V4L, HERMANAS POR VIDA--thank you for an amazing ten years.
